A survey study to evaluate the effect, impact, and awareness of ‘Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension’ among Asians with hypertension.
Hypertension is a common non-communicable disease that is prevalent worldwide, which leads to numerous disabling complications such as stroke, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease and cardiac failure. An individual is known to have hypertension if the systolic BP is ≥140 mmHg and diastolic BP is ≥90mmHg. Hypertension is recognized as a silent killer as it doesn’t show any major symptoms unlike other diseases. Most of the time individuals are unaware about having the disease, and that diet may play a vital role in control and management.
DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet was developed for the Americans by National Heart, Lung and Blood institute in 1990s. This diet recommends high intake of fruits, vegetables, low- fat milk and dairy products, whole grains, fish, poultry and nuts, and a limited intake of sweets, added sugar, sugary beverages and fatty meats.
Our study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of DASH diet in controlling and management of hypertension primarily in Asian population.
